How to find out if someone left a will?

Before my friend died she indicated she would leave me something in her will, and she was a pretty genuine person. Her husband says she didn't leave a will. Can I find out if she actually did leave a will or whether he is trying to cover it up? If he applies for probate, would that bring up that she registered a will? I have tried will registry but you need to know the exact date of birth, but she didn't like to celebrate her birthday so I only know she was born in 1953 but not the exact date. I tried ancestry.com with her married and maiden name but found nothing for her, even with a wider year date. For that matter, it couldn't even find my date of birth ! Sorry about the category but I couldn't think where else to put it :-)
